So … last night as I was flying from Miami to Las Vegas, I sat next to this girl with unbelievably large breasts, tight mini-dress, fish-net stockings and boots with high heels! We started chatting … it was inevitable! She told me she was a go-go dancer in Vegas and that she had gone to Miami for the weekend with her sugar daddy, but that things didn’t work out that well! The sugar-daddy spent $34,000 on her (clothes, first-class air ticket, hotel, etc) and consequently expected something in return. On Saturday night though, she had decided that she wanted to go out dancing and have some fun although her sugar-daddy wasn’t that interested in going clubbing. His idea of a great evening was to stay in the hotel room with her, start of with a dip in the hot-tub and then let the evening progress. They had eventually decided that she was to go out for an hour or so and then come back to the hotel room, while he was going to set-up the jacuzzi, light the candles and put on some romantic music.
My flight companion decided to come home at 6:30 am on Sunday morning, after having spent a great evening with a Russian – Israeli guy that she met at some club. She was a tad surprised when she returned to her hotel and found her suitcase all packed at the front desk! The note said ‘I’m sure you won’t have trouble finding another room to stay for the night given the way you look.’
Anyhow, the conversation continues and she eventually asks me if I was married, given that I have a wedding ring. And is it to a man or a woman, as someone in Vegas might ask! She’s bright ☺ I guess I asked too many make-up questions! When I said it was to a man … she said ‘oh, we’re both in the family then!’
It did not sink in immediately. She was a man! A transsexual to be more precise.
That’s Vegas baby ☺
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!
GETTING THERE
Vegas, as you would imagine, is very easily accessible … if you’re from North America. As I found out this time, there are very few direct international flights.
As far as I saw, the only international carriers (outside of North America) with direct flights to Vegas are bmi, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines and virgin-atlantic.
Otherwise, all American, Canadian and Mexican airlines (discount and regular) serve Vegas with several daily flights.
THINGS TO DO
> Gambling: I’m not a gambler and have perhaps gambled all of 20 minutes in all the times that I’ve been to Vegas. This also tells you how many other things are available to keep you busy if you’re like me. Nevertheless, I do realize that gambling is why the majority of people come to Vegas … and you won’t be disappointed. You can spend hours in the casinos, without even realizing what time of the day it is. They pump in fresh oxygen, they serve you free cocktails and the hours behind the blackjack table just fly away.
> Shows: Vegas is renowned for all the shows that you can catch while in Sin City. There is so much selection that you won’t have trouble finding something you love. From the acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil, to musicals like the Beatles show, to hilarious and silly comedies like Spamalot and the crooning of Celine Dion. Well she has now finished her five year stint in Vegas, and will be replaced by Bette Midler starting February 2008. The list is endless. Just pick a show and let yourself be entertained. If you plan to come to Vegas only once in your lifetime, then you definitely need to see Jubilee at Bally’s hotel. It’s got feathers, scantily clad dancers, and extravagant sets. It’s cheesy, tacky and everything that Vegas represents. It’s an ‘institution’ that’s been showing for more than 30 years! A must see.
> Shopping: Another surprise for some of you will be to find out that Vegas is a shopping mecca. Each of the massive hotels has a shopping mall within their premises, moreover, there are also some great shopping malls on the strip. My favourite is Fashion Mall which is right across from the Wynn Hotel, and cannot be missed for it has a huge flying-saucer type object on top of the roof.
> Restaurants: Vegas used to be the place of $5 buffets, where you could feast on endless grease and junk. Not so anymore. The selection of refined dining in Vegas is astonishing, combining novel interior designs with first-class chefs preparing delicious meals. All of the major hotels have excellent dining opportunities, so as you walk around during the day, see which restaurant you like and make that reservation.

> Sundance Helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon: this is truly a spectacular half-day trip. As it is, seeing the desert in all its barren beauty, bathed in glowing light is enough to make you stop for 3 seconds and appreciate the beauty of nature. Now imagine if you see this from the sky while flying to the Grand Canyon! There are several helicopter companies that offer such excursions. The one that we took combined a champagne breakfast in the Grand Canyon, along with an additional sightseeing stop. As an additional bonus, we were also picked-up and dropped-off to our hotel by a limo service. Although a bit pricey, it will make for an unforgettable trip.
> Nightlife: here again, you will be spoiled for choice! There are numerous bars in Sin City, after all, the city is well known for its excess and raunchy night life. On this trip we went to the Mix lounge, at the top of The Hotel in the Mandalay Bay complex. The bar has a stunning view of the Vegas strip, and I promise the lights will be even brighter once the vodka starts pouring down your throat. Another bar that I enjoyed is the open bar on the 51st floor of the Rio Hotel called Voodoo Lounge. The view is unforgettable.
HOTELS
There is something for every budget in this city. And the top of the line is really out of this world! And with a price to match.
> Mandalay Bay Hotel: this hotel is conveniently located at the beginning of the strip, right by the airport. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed with beautiful views of the whole strip. The spa and fitness club in this hotel is also very nice and worth a visit. For a slightly higher day rate, you can check yourself into The Hotel, which is part of the Mandalay Bay brand. This exemplifies the latest craze in Vegas which is a hotel within a hotel concept. Go figure!
> Rio Hotel: this is an all-suites hotel with very large suites. It’s not on the main strip, thus you will need to take a taxi everywhere you go. But it’s got very large rooms and a great pool area, and a great open-air bar on the 51st floor.
> Hilton Hotel: this hotel is at the very end of the strip, but within easy access of the strip, thanks to the new monorail that they have built connecting many of the major hotels. The hotel is huge, and everything you would come to expect from the Hilton brand. This is the hotel where I once saw a man in a wheelchair positioned in front of a slot machine, and with his cane he was repeatedly pushing the ‘Spin’ button hoping for his lucky day. Only in Vegas!
Other hotels that I would recommend are Wynn Hotel and the Bellagio Hotel, as well as Caesars Palace Hotel. On this trip I also found out that some of the older hotels, like the Luxor Hotel, are going through a major face-lift and renovation. Thus, your chances of coming across a hotel that is a bit tired looking and has seen better days are less likely.
ADDENDUM
The main thing to remember about Vegas is that the options are endless. It’s hard to recommend what is the best place and where to go for every time we’ve been there, we’ve had a fantastic time. Land, unpack your suitcase and let Sin City swallow you up. There is no city like Vegas. And I guarantee that if you go with an open mind, you won’t be disappointed.
Something new that I realized on this trip was that although hot most of the year, Vegas in the winter is not warm. You will definitely need a jacket for the desert gets very chilly during the winter months, especially the winter nights.
